Bakes & Co serves up recipe for success
After a varied career including owner/managing her own vegetarian café in Scunthorpe, Liz Bakes, owner of Bakes & Co moved to York six years’ ago. With a burning ambition to open her own Café/Deli and with support from her family she started looking for suitable premises which she subsequently found in Gillygate.
While waiting she started baking her own products for sale in markets and festivals and realising she wanted to improve her business knowledge and skills, Liz turned to leading business development specialists Business Support York & North Yorkshire (BSYNY) for help.
She attended some workshops and quickly realised she was not as ready as she thought. Liz became aware that she needed a clearer understanding of business planning and working the numbers and the events provided her with the necessary skills to evaluate her business idea and gave her confidence to progress it. Liz then engaged with business support specialist Mike Everitt who encouraged her to apply for access to the Regional Growth Fund Start & Grow programme which provides three-year’s pre & post start business support worth up to £5000 and this in turn facilitated access to low-cost funding via the Start Up Loan Company and local Whyte Knight Fund.
Liz says “I wanted to wait until I found the right premises and whilst York has many food outlets I feel there is still room for more that offer something a little different, combining quality local products with excellent customer service at a fair price.”
She added, “Now the doors are open and they have a wide range of products including locally produced artisan bread, quality pies, (some people come just for those!), specialist home-produced sandwiches, cakes & pastries. Add sourdough pizzas (fresh daily) and excellent coffee in a friendly, relaxing eat-in or take-away experience with local artwork on the walls and wi-fi to boot and you have Bakes & Co.”
Mike Everitt from BSYNY commented, “We have been working with Liz for some time while she was searching for local premises. The key was to ensure she had a good understanding and focus on the business proposition and the funding in place in order that she could move quickly when premises became available. We have been able to support her through training & mentoring in particular and she demonstrated the determination to succeed. I’m very pleased that we have been able to support her in many ways and will do so into the future.”
